PITTSBURGH --

Three children are safe after being rescued overnight from a burning Hazelwood home.

The flames began around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday in a vacant home then spread to neighboring homes.

Three children, ages 9, 12 and 15, were sleeping in one of the houses while their mother was working at Kane Hospital. She heard about the fire at work and rushed to the scene. Her neighbor was walking his dog, saw the flames, called his brother and rushed in to get the sleeping kids out.

They all got out safely. The children and their mother are staying with relatives.

Meanwhile, firefighters said the fire is suspicious. Neighbors heard crackling sounds shortly before the fire started.

There was a lot of debris on the porch in front of one of the vacant houses. Someone was evicted from one of the vacant houses two days ago.

The arson department is investigating the cause of the fire.
