SAN ANTONIO --
Multiple explosions erupted during a fire at a pallet company near the Alamodome Monday afternoon.
Fire broke out at the plant just after 3 p.m. and could be seen well beyond the downtown area.
"I was 10 miles away and I could see the smoke. I could tell it was a serious fire," said Edgar Lozano, owner of Atlas Pallet.
The cause of the fire is unknown, but this blaze is the second fire at the company in the past six months.
Multiple firefighting crews came to drown the fire in what San Antonio Fire Department Chief Charles Hood called a "target-rich environment."
"Everything was on fire, and I mean everything," said Hood. "We have reports of one large propane tank being thrown up about 250 feet in the air from the explosion."
Although Lozano said there were no toxic chemicals at the plant, hazmat crews were called in to collect water and air samples as a precaution.
A code compliance official said Lozano has been working with the city on compliance issues, but did not go into detail.
"It's heartbreaking," said Lozano. "But what I need to do is concentrate on how we're going to survive this."
