BROOKLINE, Pa. --
Investigators are looking into the exact cause of a fire in Brookline. Flames were first spotted just after 11 p.m. Tuesday in the 900 block of Brookline Boulevard.
The fire started in a building that housed a tanning salon and clothing store. It quickly spread to nearby apartments and 10 residents managed to get out safely.
Investigators said it appears the flames started in the kitchen of a basement apartment with a grease fire. Damage to the businesses and apartments is extensive.
Jim Tegtmeir owns the tanning salon. He said, "It looks like the building is a total loss. We lost 10 beds, thousands of dollars in supplies. The lady next door lost tens of thousands of dollars in T-Shirts. It's a mess."
Two firefighters were injured battling the blaze. One was treated for heat exhaustion at the scene. Another firefighter was sent to a local hospital with a rib injury.
The American Red Cross said it is helping two families with food, clothing and shelter.
