TURTLE CREEK, Pa. --
"Guns and Hoses" might sound like a 1980s rock and roll band, but it's actually the name of new project with a lifesaving goal.
Heart disease is one of the most common killers among police officers and firefighters. With help from UPMC, the hope is to start screenings in May for police officers and in October for firefighters.
The project kicked off on Tuesday with a luncheon in Turtle Creek.
"The study is going to start from when a police officer or fireman graduates from the academy to his retirement," said project organizer Jimmy Cvetic. "We'll even check the officers who are presently retired. This is going to be an ongoing program."
On Feb. 9, police officers and firefighters will compete in a boxing tournament at the downtown Hilton. Proceeds will go to heart research and help the families of those killed on the job send their children to college.
