North Carolina Firefighter Injured on Ice While Battling Blaze

HIGH SHOALS, N.C. --

A firefighter in Gaston County is recovering after being injured while battling a mill fire.

Investigators say he slipped on some ice on the ground Thursday morning at the old Hardin Mill in High Shoals.

The fire started around 1 a.m. at the mill on Hardin Road. Fire officials said some of the water firefighters shuttled in to fight the flames spilled and froze, leaving sheets of ice.

The road had to be closed for a time while crews worked to put out the blaze.

Officials said the building was used mostly for storage.
