GUILFORD, Conn. --

A firefighter in Guilford is recovering after being burned fighting a blaze early Sunday morning.

The blaze broke out in the home on Lakeside Drive around 3 a.m. Sunday.

It is not yet clear what caused the fire, but a couple sleeping inside woke when they heard their smoke detector and were able to get out safely with their two cats, firefighters said.

The firefighter was taken to a local hospital for his injuries.

Tanker trucks had to be brought in to take out the fire since this area of Guilford doesn't have hydrants. Firefighters also dropped a line into the lake to pull additional water.
