HACIENDA HEIGHTS, Calif. --

Two adjacent homes were destroyed in a fire that was knocked down in less than a half-hour on Friday, but the blaze was driven in part by ammunition stored inside one of the residences, authorities said.

Los Angeles County firefighters were called to the 2000 block of Punta del Este Drive in Hacienda Heights shortly after 2 p.m. The fire was knocked down at 2:33 p.m., a fire official said.

A barbecue was under way in the back yard of one of the homes when the fire started, but it was not immediately clear if propane contributed to the fire, said county fire dispatcher Ray Dong.

One firefighter suffered from fatigue and became weak and dizzy. He was sent to a hospital for evaluation, fire officials said.

"One of the homes had a large amount of ammo," a county fire dispatcher said.

Haralson said the owner told firefighters there was ammunition inside.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
