Crews on Tuesday rescued a woman whose vehicle plunged down an embankment from a mountain road in the Santa Clarita area.

Sheriff's deputies and firefighters were sent to the area of Sand Canyon and Placerita Canyon roads at about 8:30 a.m., said Inspector Ron Haralson of the county fire department.

The woman, in her 70s, was hoisted out of the remote area via helicopter at about 11 a.m., and was taken to a hospital, but her condition was not immediately known.

Sgt. Darren Harris of the sheriff's Santa Clarita Station said the woman used a cell phone to call for help.

"She told us when she could hear our sirens, and that helped us find her," Harris said.
