ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --

Early Wednesday morning, a barn fire left four horses dead in Albuquerque's south valley.

It happened around 3:30 a.m. near Fifth and Eastview streets.

The owner of the property, Dawn Lopez, said she did not know anything was wrong until a neighbor woke her up and told her the barn was on fire. The same neighbor also helped the owner carry her children to safety.

Lopez told Action 7 News the event was very scary and she is grateful to still be alive.

Neighbors quickly helped to put water on Lopez's home and keep the flames contained to the barn.

Firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire.
