COLUMBIA - Last week Columbia fireman Robert Joyner was competing to see how quickly he could save a life. This week he found himself seeing how quickly he could save his own.
It was a fast-paced race last weekend in the jaws of life competition. That's where WIS showed you how quickly firefighter Robert Joyner and his team could save a life.
Now, he tells us, "The things I learned this weekend, I put them right on the streets today."
On Wednesday, Joyner got to put his life-saving skills to the test, except he didn't have to use the jaws of life to do it. He used his own body. "We got the call and responded and I was ready to make entry into the house and realized I heard a faint cry. We went around and tried to force entry and found a window and we could see the victim inside. We didn't have much time and I decided to go through the window. I had to dive through the window, but we got her out."
He saved the life of Bethel Hanberry kindergarten teacher Julia Daniel. In the process he hurt his shoulder, causing him to go to the hospital. But for him the pain was a small sacrifice. "When you make that one save like that it makes all the training and everything you missed worthwhile."
Joyner says Daniel is expected to make a full recovery. As for himself, "Tomorrow morning I get up and I'm going to report back to Rescue 3 and I'm going to be protecting northeast Columbia again."
