GATIHERSBURG, Md. --

Fire officials said three people were killed in a house fire early Monday morning in Gaithersburg.

Firefighters were called to battle the blaze at about 3:50 a.m. at a home in the 17800 block of Muncaster Road.

Authorities said that a 6-year-old boy, an elderly woman, and the woman's daughter were killed. Authorities said the boy and one adult was pulled from the fire. They later died at a local hospital. The second adult never made it out of the home, News4's Tracee Wilkins reported.

Authorities said a teenage boy was able to escape and knocked on a neighbor's door.

Officials said they believe the fire started on the first floor. They said about 60 firefighters were called to battle the blaze and part of the house collapsed.

Roads are closed at Muncaster Road, Muncaster Mill Road and Cynthia Lane.

The exact cause of the fire is being investigated.
