CHARLOTTE, N.C. --

Charlotte firefighters, in stations across the city, stood for a moment of silence Tuesday night. The nationwide moment of silence was held at 7 p.m., the same time the fire at a furniture store in Charleston, S.C., caught fire Monday night.

Nine firefighters were killed, the single greatest loss of American firefighters since 9-11.

Here in Charlotte, crews say there was a lot of reflection Tuesday, but the easiest way to cope is to get back on the job.

"The best therapy is guys getting back on the truck and doing their job, that's why we're here," said Battalion Chief Tony Ray.

They said their thoughts and prayers are with the families of those fallen firefighters.

Ray said it's usually their family members who have the hardest time, not knowing day to day if their loved ones are coming home.
