WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --
Residents at a city apartment complex are looking for a new home after fire tore through their building.
Firefighters said lightning is likely to blame for the Tuesday night fire at Colonial Village at Mill Creek Apartments.
About 600 Triad residents remained without power Wednesday morning after storms passed through the area Tuesday. About 5,000 customers were without power Tuesday night.
At least 14 adults and 13 children were displaced in the apartment fire. No injuries were reported.
Diego Costa and Tulio Joidao, who lived in the top floor of the building, said someone knocked on their door and told them to get out.
"We just picked up the kids and ran out. We left everything," Costa said. "We barely got out. It took the whole ceiling from the living room right out."
The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced families with food and shelter.
