GOLDEN, Colo. --
The climber who was rescued from Clear Creek Canyon a week ago will be charged a fee for his rescue.
It took several hours to bring David Seals, 34, 600 feet down the side of the canyon on Tuesday morning.
Seals started up the canyon wall the day before with his brother and a friend but injured his ankle when he jumped off a rock ledge on the way down. He spent the night in the canyon while the others went for help.
Seals was brought down the mountain Tuesday morning and then treated and released at St. Anthony Hospital. The extended rescue operation shut down busy U.S. Highway 6 and involved crews from several different agencies. It was carried live on CNN and had a nationwide audience.
The Golden Fire Department took part in the rescue, but the location is outside its jurisdiction. It is sending seals a bill for about $5,000.
The West Metro Fire Protection District considered billing seals about $2,400 for overtime, but decided against it after finding out he didn't have insurance and couldn't pay.
