Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - The Red Cross is helping 11 tenants who were chased from their Eastwood apartment building by fire around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Flames and heavy smoke were coming from the second floor of the building, which is located on the 2800 block of James Street between North Collingwood Avenue and North Edwards Avenue.

Fire Chief John Cowin says ten people were in the upstairs apartments of the building when the fire started. They all made it out safely.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire contained to one building. Right now, they do not know how it started.

Crews have shut down James Street, between Midler Avenue and North Collingwood Avenue. There is no word yet on when that will be back open.
