The family-run business at 5000 South Peachtree Street has been in the Gwinnett County city since 1946 and specialized in cedar.

The lumberyard was closed when witnesses reported the fire just after 6 p.m. yesterday.

More than 40 firefighters battled the blaze.

The smoke from the fire was so thick it could be seen on StormTracker 2 HD Radar.

The cause remains under investigation.

At one point last night, firefighters evacuated two small strip malls nearby and several homes behind the lumber yard. Those evacuated included a woman who lives next to the yard and her six dogs.

Authorities say the businesses in the area should be able to operate as usual today.

Battalion Chief Gary Moon says the lumberyard is a total loss.

Company President John Walker says a witness told him the fire appeared to start in the area of the new roof.
