"The cab flipped over the guardrail and snapped off from the rest of the truck," said motorist Robert Griffin.
Police said they are not sure if the tanker fell onto the home or debris caused the fire.
Officials said the home was occupied.
Latasha Davis and her three children, ages 12, 14 and 16, were inside the home. Davis said she heard a loud noise, saw the flames and got her three children out of the home.
"When I was laying down, the flame came through my window," said Davis.
They were not injured.
Southbound I-75 at the Rouge River Bridge has been re-opened. The northbound lanes are expected to remain closed at Outer Drive for at least 8 more hours per MSP.
