Several people were looking for a place to stay after a fire in their Plainfield apartment building early Friday morning.
Ten to 12 people were inside the eight-unit building on North Center Street when the blaze started just after 6 a.m., said Plainfield Fire Department Assistant Chief Woody Woodruff.
When firefighters arrived, three people were still upstairs. Firefighters helped them exit through a back door, Woodruff said. Everyone was able to get out safely; no injuries were reported.
Woodruff said the cold winter air -- temperatures were well below freezing -- did not disrupt rescue or firefighting efforts.
"With the water we carry ... we had enough water to continue the firefight before they were able to get water out of the hydrants," Woodruff said. "There was no interruption or stop in the water supply from this fire."
The fire heavily damaged one unit and moderately damaged another. Other units had smoke and water damage.
The number of residents displaced because of the fire was not immediately released.
On Friday afternoon, Woodruff said investigators had nearly ruled out foul play, but the cause still hadn't been determined.
