INDIANAPOLIS --
A University of Indianapolis student was killed and two relatives were seriously injured in one of two fires on Indianapolis' south side Wednesday morning.
Katherine Hamilton, 20, was killed in the 5 a.m. fire in the 600 block of Cottage Avenue.
Her mother, Anna Bennett, jumped from a second-story window and sought help from neighbors. One of Bennett's other daughters, Kristen, was helped to safety by firefighters, officials said.
Bennett and her daughter Kristen were taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital; both were listed in serious condition Wednesday afternoon. Details about their injuries weren't available.
Hamilton was a sophomore history and political science major at UIndy. Her mother works at the school's Academic Success Center, UIndy said.
Firefighters said a smoke detector in the house did not work. Investigators said they were trying to determine how and where the fire began, but they said they believed the cause was accidental.
Sue Myers, who lives across the street, said Bennett came to her home covered in blood and knocked on the door.
"I just heard somebody banging on the door. By the time I got up and got dressed and got to the door, she's hollering, 'Get my babies,'" Meyers said.
A few hours earlier, a garage was damaged in an arson in the 300 block of East Minnesota Street, officials said. No one was injured in that fire.
Fire investigators said they didn't believe the garage arson was connected to 13 other arsons that happened in the area since May 23.
