MILWAUKEE --
Arson investigators and police were back on the scene Thursday morning of what was a massive fire on Milwaukee's north side.
A fire tore through Best Lumber and Fuel Company, at 4530 N. Green Bay Ave., and spread to a couple of adjacent buildings Wednesday evening.
More than 150 fire personnel in 37 fire vehicles responded to the blaze, Chief Doug Holton with the Milwaukee Fire Department said in a press conference Wednesday evening. The first responders were on the scene within five minutes of receiving the first call of the fire, Holton said.
Hazmat crews also responded.
One firefighter was transferred to a hospital due to exhaustion, Holton said.
Electricity and gas service was shut off in the area of the fire to protect the firefighters and residents that lived in the area were not allowed to return to their homes.
Firefighters initially had some difficulty fighting the fire because the area is flanked by Evergreen Cemetery and railroad tracks, Matt Selemme reported from NewsChopper 12.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
