The mother of a three-year-old killed in a weekend house fire faces a manslaughter charge after Birmingham police determined the boy was left alone in the home.

Authorities said 25-year-old Lashonda Spigner is being held in the Jefferson County Jail with her bail set at $25,000.

The boy, Darrion Grant, died early Sunday morning when flames consumed his house on 40th Avenue North. Firefighters received the emergency call shortly before 1 a.m.

Police said the youngster's older brother, a nine-year-old, told police he attempted to pull Darrion out of the burning house, but he broke free and ran back inside.

The Jefferson County Coroner's office said it appeared the blaze started in the kitchen.
