Investigators on Wednesday were looking into a suspected arson they said could be related to a double-murder case.
Crews were called to a home Intervale Road in Freedom on Monday night and found it fully engulfed in flames.
"The home was pretty much destroyed," said Deputy Fire Marshal John Raymond. "At this time, our investigators have been on the scene for a couple days now. They view the fire as incendiary, as arson."
The home in the private lakeside community with few year-round residents belongs to Sean Fitzpatrick. It sits directly across the street from a house belonging to the parents of Michael Zemitti.
Police said Zemitti and another man were shot and killed in March 2006 at a concrete company in Wakefield, Mass. Fitzpatrick, a longtime friend and neighbor of Zemitti's, was charged with the shootings in June.
Prosecutors said Fitzpatrick wanted to pursue a relationship with Zemitti's wife. Investigators are looking into whether the fire is retaliation for the shooting.
"It's something we're going to have to follow-up on, but at this time here, we can't tie it into that or not, so it's going to be part of the investigation," Raymond said.
Fitzpatrick is currently awaiting trial. Neighbors said that no one has been living in the Fitzpatrick home recently.
"We'll be conducting interviews with the first arriving firefighters, people that discovered the fire first and called it into 911," Raymond said. "We'll continue the investigation with neighbors up and down the street, working very closely with the Freedom Police Department and Fire Department."
Investigators said that anyone with information should call the state's arson hot line at 800-400-3526.
