Two Children Killed in Brooklyn Fire

Four firefighters were being treated for minor injuries after battling heavy wind and smoke conditions.

Two children were killed in a third-alarm fire that burned through two homes in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn.

Newscopter Seven was live over the scene.

The fire broke out in 514 Fifth Avenue, at 73rd Street, just after 5 a.m.The fire department arrived, and at one point had the fire extinguished but then it flared up again.

Flames quickly spread to the home next door at 518 Fifth Avenue.

Relatives said the children -- ages two and four -- were trapped in the flames. Eyewitness News is told the mother of the children got out of the home, and was burned trying to rescue her children.

Officials say three other residents were treated for minor injuries after they were evacuated from the homes. Four firefighters were being treated for minor injuries. They battled heavy wind and smoke conditions.

The fire was being brought under control hours later. The cause was not immediately known.
