For most of Monday night and into Tuesday morning, fire crews were on the scene of a fire on Canal Street in New Smyrna Beach. They had to break many of the windows in store and were waiting for an 'all clear' to go inside and start their investigation.
Flames and smoke shot from the roof of the two-story, 40,000-square-foot building in the downtown area of New Smyrna Beach. The fire included three businesses at Canal Street and Orange Avenue in the historic area.
Firefighters said the second floor and roof collapsed into the building. They said damages could reach several hundred-thousand dollars.
Dozens of firefighters from across Volusia County doused the three-alarm fire with water. It was discovered by a New Smyrna Beach police officer who noticed the heavy smoke.
"It's huge. This is a historical landmark. These are old buildings. Canal Street is our Main Street. This is our old business district. This is going to upset a lot of people," said Lt. Cindy Richenberg of the New Smyrna Beach Fire Rescue.
The fire will be upsetting to a few drivers in the area, as well. Several nearby roads will be shut down until Tuesday afternoon.
