WILKINSBURG, Pa. --
One person was killed after becoming trapped inside a burning rowhouse in Wilkinsburg early Sunday morning, police said.
Flames broke out at about 2:30 a.m. inside the home in the 1700 block of Montier Street. (Map)
Two fire departments battled to keep the flames from reaching neighboring houses. Two of the homes were damaged by smoke, police said.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office identified the victim as 29-year-old William Goods III, who lived in the home.
County homicide detectives are investigating, but so far, there has been no word on what may have sparked the fire.
Nathaniel McIntosh, one of Goods' roommates, said he was asleep when the fire started, but he woke up when his pet birds began chirping because of the smoke.
"I'd be dead right now if it wasn't for my birds," he said. "They woke me but I couldn't save them. I could barely save myself."
McIntosh and a third roommate were able to climb onto the roof of a neighbor's rowhouse, where they were rescued by firefighters.
