MIAMI --
An unintended fireworks display illuminated the sky as a house burned Sunday night.
Firefighters responded to the fire located at 5018 N.W. 31st Ave. at about 8 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters found the house engulfed in flames. That's when the fireworks started going off.
The homeowner said she kept the fireworks in a shed behind the house illegally.
"Well, I'm not going to lie. Yes," Liz Howard said.
But she said the fireworks didn't cause the fire.
"The air condition (unit) started the fire in the back room," Howard said.
The fireworks posed an added danger to the firefighters who were battling the blaze.
"Our gear protects us from heat and fumes only, not from explosive materials," Miami-Dade fire-rescue Lt. Elkin Sierra said.
No one in the house was injured, and the American Red Cross was assisting the family.
Fire investigators ruled the blaze an accident but didn't state the cause.
