Intense brush fire burns near 1-78 in New Jersey

No homes or businesses appeared to be immediately threatened by the fire.

(New York - WABC, March 17, 2006) - A fire was burned through an area of brush in Newark this afternoon, sending heavy smoke spewing through the area.

The fire was burning in an open area near Frelinghuysen Avenue and East Peddie Street. Authorities received numerous 911 calls for a heavy smoke condition in the area.

The fire burned north of Interstate 78, near the intersection of Routes 1 & 9. A Conrail train line runs through the fire area.

No homes or businesses appeared to be immediately threatened by the fire.
