BALTIMORE -- The Baltimore City Fire Department said a blaze early Friday morning in southwest Baltimore proved again that smoke detectors save lives.

The fire was reported about 2 a.m. in a 3-story home in the 300 block of Collins Avenue. Fire department spokesman Kevin Cartwright said a woman was awakened by her smoke detector, allowing her to escape the smoke and flames.

The house collapsed and has been condemned. Two adjacent homes were heavily damaged. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Cartwright said one emergency responder had a minor leg injury. The woman had a prior medical condition and was taken to Saint Agnes hospital for observation.

Crews rescued about a half-dozen pit bulls living in the basement of one of the buildings.
