A Sunday morning fire heavily damaged a former church that is slated to become a community center honoring a victim of the Columbine High School massacre.
The fire broke out shortly after 7 a.m. at the former First Baptist Church on South Main Street.
Firefighters were able to keep much of the historic church intact, but attached buildings were heavily damaged by the fire.
The building is to become "Rachel's Place" , a multi-use community center honoring Rachel Joy Scott, a 17-year-old killed in the 1999 shooting spree.
Rachel is the niece of John and Debbie Phillips, who are working to build the center.
There is no word yet as to how the fire will affect the Phillips' plans. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
