One Hour Into Fire Season, San Jose Crews Get Called

June 12, 2006
This fire season could be more dangerous than in previous years.

A truck fire spread that spread to brush on the side of the highway overnight is a good reminder to South Bay residents that fire season is under way.

The truck was parked on the side of the road off Highway 101 just north of 13th Street when it caught fire and spread to the embankment. But the fire department was able to get out there and put the brush fire out. The truck was carrying wooden pallets and that helped fuel the flames.

Experts tell NBC11 News that this fire season could be more dangerous than years past.

Mostly because we had a longer wetter spring that has given us taller vegetation. Grass that is normally two to three feet tall is now more like four to five feet tall.

The fire season began in 19 other counties last week.

"We are fully-prepared and ready to go," CDF's Director Ruben Grijalva said in a news release.

"There is always a tremendous potential for wildfire in California," he said.

The CDF says there is ample equipment and personnel ready for fire season, but Californians can protect themselves with a few tips:

  • Be informed
  • Clear at least a 30-foot perimeter around your house
  • Trim tree branches and brush 8 feet from ground
