The fire was reported on the 16th floor at about 1:30 p.m. in the 3700 block of La Jolla Drive in University City.

Firefighters reported seeing heavy smoke rising from the top of the hotel and on multiple floors.

San Diego police helped control traffic in the area, officials said. Closing the traffic helped in staging the firetrucks to fight the fire, police said.

Firefighters confirmed at about 2:45 p.m. that the blaze was a basement fire in the laundry room that extended into the first and second floors of the hotel.

Fire crews gained control of the fire just a little more than an hour after it was reported, and fire officials began releasing units from the scene, officials said.

No injuries have been reported.
