CHARLOTTE, N.C. --

A father went to the hospital with life-threatening injuries Wednesday, saving his children from an early morning fire in south Charlotte.

Firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire on Providence Square Road around 4:45 a.m. A neighbor on his way to work saw the smoke rising from an apartment. He broke a first-floor window and pulled the father out of the apartment.

The father and the neighbor went back inside for two children. The two children got out without serious injury, but their father went to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The neighbor who stopped to help was not hurt.

Firefighters believe the fire started by accident in the kitchen, but a brick firewall stopped the flames from spreading to any other apartments. Neighbors had to be temporarily evacuated.
