South Carolina Firefighters Control Blaze

March 15, 2006
Dry conditions sparked wildfires scorching dozens of acres.

A grass fire in Spartanburg County burned dozens of acres Tuesday near Broome High School.

At one time the forestry commission thought 25 to 30 acres was burning, but those numbers are not yet official. Firefighters, however, said battling the blaze was difficult.

"With the winds up and dry conditions, we had a little rain but it was not enough to even wet the top of the ground," said Converse Fire Chief Tim Jones. "The winds dried things right back out. This is an example of what can happen."

Firefighters used more than water to stop the wildfire and said the only losses were torched in a nearby junkyard

Jones said all of this could have been much worse.

"It was just like waves rolling through the woods," said Jones.

The forestry commission said it still does not know what started the fire. Wednesday, park rangers will use GPS navigation to try and determine how many acres have been burned.
