MIDDLETOWN, Conn. --

The Middletown Fire Department found a diamond engagement ring while emptying a boot full of donated money and they are not sure it was meant to be a donation.

This summer, firefighters in Middletown collected donations for the effort against muscular dystrophy.

Among the items, a diamond ring was found.

A firefighter showed it to a jeweler, who confirmed that the diamond is real and likely an heirloom.

The ring was dropped in a boot at Main and Washington Streets, probably in late July or early August.

Firefighters across Connecticut try to get drivers to stop and Fill The Boot in fund drives.

In Middletown the firefighters raised more than $10,000.

Anyone wishing to claim the ring can contact the fire department.
