A well-known bar and a bakery burst into flames Saturday night on the city's South Side, firefighters said.
A barbecue pit that had been burning caused the two-alarm blaze, which spread into the attic of the Silverado Bar in the 1200 block of Probandt, firefighters said
Workers inside the bar felt the heat coming from the roof and immediately called for help, firefighters said.
Everyone escaped the building safely while the fire quickly spread to the Fiesta Bakery, firefighters said.
Valentine Vera, the property owner, said the damage will keep him out of business for a while but he's glad everyone made it out safe.
"We've been in business for almost 20 years," Vera said. "It's sad to see it go up like this."
A group of customers helped Vera clean up after the fire that caused about $120,000 in damages.
Vera said he has insurance and plans to rebuild the businesses because he knows that's what his customers would want him to do.
