A man was killed in a mobile home fire in Waynetown early Sunday morning.
Randy Edwards died in the blaze, despite efforts to rescue him. He was the only person inside the home at the time.
Randy Edwards was an older brother and best friend to Ron Edwards. The two had plans to go hunting in two weeks. Now, Ron Edwards is trying to cope with the most devastating news he has ever received, RTV6's Jennifer Carmack reported.
"He was an all-around good guy -- do anything for you. Everybody liked him," Ron Edwards said. "Get a phone call at work saying your brother died in a fire -- that's pretty hard to take."
There wasn't much left of the mobile home following the fire, which broke out just before 6 a.m.
Fire officials said it started in one end of the trailer and spread very quickly.
Neighbor David Johnson knew someone was trapped inside, so he rushed to the burning home to try to help.
"I started hollering and everything -- tried to get in the back door and the back door was too hot. Then, I busted in the window and cut myself all up," Johnson said.
Johnson did not know Edwards, but that did not stop him from trying to rescue his neighbor.
"I stuck my head in the window after busting it out and hollered and hollered and the smoke started getting to me," Johnson said. "Then, I saw the flames shooting down the hallway. I knew it was too late then."
Investigators said Edwards was dead when firefighters pulled him out. They said the fire appears to be accidental and they believe it started in the living room.
The fire marshal is awaiting an autopsy before ruling an exact cause for the fire. Officials did not know if there were working fire detectors inside the home.
