The structure was significantly damaged

Eight members of a Kansas City family escaped their home when fire swept through it early Friday morning.

Firefighters were called to 36th Street and Mersington Avenue at about 4 a.m.

The family told KMBC's Brenda Washington that they saw the fire and tried to put it out themselves. When that did not work, everyone fled the home and a grandmother dragged a phone out to call 911.

No one was hurt, but the home was significantly damaged.
