A man was rescued from his burning home in northwest Houston early Thursday morning, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Houston firefighters responded to the blaze in the 5800 block of Silver Forest Drive at Deep Forest Drive shortly before 2 a.m.

Firefighters heard a man screaming for help when they arrived at the home.

One of the firefighters broke a window and gave the man his oxygen mask until other firefighters could get inside the house.

The man suffered minor smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene.

Officials said a candle on the back porch may have sparked the fire.

"The gentleman had some type of pet, a bird, and maybe he had a candle underneath the cage or something trying to keep it warm," Herman Gonzales said. "It looks like it may have started from there."

Arson investigators will examine the scene to determine the exact cause.

The home sustained heavy smoke and fire damage.
