Virginia Firefighters Battle Hazardous Shed, House Fire

Firefighters hit the shed with a fierce outside defensive attack.

The call was dispatched at 1404 hours, Aug 23, for 1900 Periwinkle Road in Chesterfield County as a shed fire. As responding firefighters approached, a huge column of black smoke was seen rising upward. First on scene reported a shed fully involved. Fire was extending to the nearby home.

Responding were Engine 17, Engine 3, Engine 1, Truck 14, Truck 3, Medic 17, TSO and a Battalion Chief.

Flames licked the sky, smoke rolled and inside the shed. Firefighters discovered two 55 gallon drums filled with oil had ignited and were burning. Tires were on fire. Gasoline in cans were nearby,vehicles were parked at the entrance and to the side. The resident's home was feet away, neighbor's homes were feet away. A wooden privacy fence created a hazard and was also burning.

Firefighters hit the shed with a fierce outside defensive attack and entered the residence launching an aggressive interior attic on the fire which now extended into the home's attic.

The shed was total loss, the home partially damaged, but the neighbor's homes were protected and no injuries were reported. The residents were displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
