Lancaster Fire Chief Jeff Pierce is stepping down.
"The only time people think of firefighters is when they smell smoke. And these people are there on a daily basis to protect us on so many levels," said Mayor Rick Gray at a press conference today. "I'd like to thank Chief Pierce for what he has done."
Pierce served as chief for seven years. Pierce said he had been considering stepping down for several months. He said after 25 years in firefighting, he wanted to transition into another career. He is expected to take a safety position with Tyson's Food.
Gray said it will take a matter of weeks to fill the fire chief position.
The city is also looking for a police chief. Gray said he's not worried about the city being left without a fire or police chief while replacements are sought.
