DeKalb County investigators were searching Thurday for the cause of a blaze that destroyed several units and sent residents into the chilly morning air.
No injuries were reported during the two-alarm fire, which broke out shortly after 7 a.m. at the Cedar Pine Apartments, located in the 1000 block of Montreal Road. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control in about an hour, authorities said.
DeKalb firefighters said the Red Cross was called to help the six adults and two children who lost their homes in the blaze.
Residents fled from their apartments into the street in temperatures that were in the 40s while firefighters battled the blaze.
Kenya Dailey, who fled the Gulf Coast to get away from Hurricane Katrina, said she managed to escape the burning complex, but returned to help others get out.
"The first thing I could do was get everybody out of their apartments," she said.
The exact cause was pending, but authorities said it appears the fire was accidental.
