Firefighters battling a Brentwood house fire Monday pulled a 64-year-old man out of the burning home.
Leroy White, reported to be suffering from smoke inhalation, was transported to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center, where he was in critical condition.
"[White] was semi-conscious, with labored breathing, of course they brought him outside where he was then transported to Shands," said Tom Frances of Jacksonville Fire-Rescue.
White's son-in-law James Jones said he tried everything to get inside the house to find his father-in-law.
"I ran around the back and was calling for my daddy-in-law. Then I tried to see if I could get him out through the front, but I couldn't do nothing because there was too much smoke," Jones said. "I was scared. He was still trapped in there."
Investigators said they tried to get White out of the house by using a side door. They said the fire started in a hallway because of a space heater.
In addition to White, two firefighters were taken to Shands. One was treated and released and the other was being treated for what a Jacksonville Fire-Rescue spokesman described as "discomfort," and was reported to be good condition.
Investigators said there were no working smoke detectors in the home.
