A car ran off the road hitting an exposed gas pipe at South Deshon Road and Alford Road in DeKalb County just before 5:00 p.m. Thursday evening--causing a massive fire.
The car hit the pipe near a neighborhood, but Capt. Eric Jackson with the DeKalb County Fire Department said there were no evacuations planned.
Atlanta Gas Light was called to the scene and was working on getting the gas shut off to the pipe. The gas from the break continued to fuel the car fire, even after the car had been burnt down to the metal.
Capt. Jackson said firefighters on the scene had to contain the fire, but had to let the fire burn the car until the gas company could shut off the gas.
The person driving the vehicle was not on the scene. Police are trying to locate the driver.
No injuries have been reported.
