One child was unaccounted for after a fire erupted in a two-story home Thursday morning.

The fire, which could seen for miles, broke out at about 6:40 a.m. near 80th Avenue and Larkwood Street.

A mother and three of her children managed to escape the flames, but her fourth child could not be found. Several people tried to re-enter the burning home to look for the child but were driven back by intense smoke and flames.

A relative said the children were ages 5, 4, 3 and 1. The 4-year-old is the one who was unaccounted for.

The father was away on a business trip at the time of the fire.

Firefighters were waiting for the structure to cool before conducting a search for the child.

An injured firefighter was taken to a waiting ambulance and transported to a local hospital. That person's condition was not immediately known, but they appeared to be conscious.

Firefighters from South Adams County Fire attacked the blaze, but intense flames and smoke hampered their efforts and the fire spread quickly.
