A toddler died in a house fire just after 10 a.m. Sunday at a home on Cotton Blossom Drive.
Fire officials responded to the blaze shortly after it began and learned a child was trapped inside. They pulled Garrison Chamberlin, 2, out, but it was too late, 6News' Jennifer Carmack reported.
"I first saw the firefighters bust out the window and before I knew it, they were carrying something out and it looked like toddler's feet," said neighbor Donna Marcinko.
Firefighters said Chamberlin was in the room where the fire began. Five other children and four adults, who were also inside, made it out safely.
"Not only the family here is going to be affected by this, but we had a team of firefighters that went in to rescue that child and had to carry that child out," said Ron Lipps, of the Fishers Fire Department. "I don't know how they're going to handle this."
Police said the homeowner heard the smoke alarm, grabbed two kids and ran them out. When he tried to go in for Garrison, the smoke and heat were too much.
"It's very tragic. You never think it could happen to you," said neighbor Chris Amon. "It makes you more thankful for what you have and your family."
This is the first fire death the Fishers Fire Department has handled in 50 years. Firefighters hope the tragic death reminds others that fires move quickly and shatter lives.
"Everybody in your family, from the littlest kid to the oldest adult, needs to understand the quickness of fire and that you've got to get outside as quickly as possible," Lipps said.
Investigators have not released the cause of the fire. They are awaiting autopsy results, which should be completed in a few days.
