Las Vegas Fire and Rescue Department Chief David L. Washington announced that he plans to retire. His last day will be October 1, 2007. Chief Washington has led the department for the past six years, and will have served 33 years in the fire service.
"It has been a true honor to be able to serve this community," said Chief Washington. "I am so proud to watch our department grow into one of the best in the world. The citizens of Las Vegas deserve the very best."
Under Chief Washington???s leadership, the Las Vegas Fire and Rescue Department was accredited for the first time by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International. This honor goes solely to departments that can demonstrate the finest in all areas of the fire service. The department also maintained its Class One Rating from the Insurance Services Office (ISO). The ISO rating is what many insurance companies use to set rates. A Class One Rating is the best possible, and indicates the department's high standards in protecting the community.
Only eight departments in North America can boast at having both an accreditation and an ISO Class One Rating.
In addition, the department has kept pace with growth under Chief Washington's leadership, going from 10 fire stations around the city to 16.
"Chief Washington set a whole new standard of achievement for the department during his tenure as its director," said City Manager Douglas Selby. "He has done a tremendous job and will be greatly missed."
Chief Washington joined the Las Vegas Fire and Rescue Department on September 13, 1974. He rose to the rank of chief on August 15, 2001.
