Fire Snarls D.C. Commuters

Jan. 31, 2007
Two incidents created havoc.

Metro had its share of problems Wednesday morning.

A fire reported on the tracks inside the Farragut North Metro Station in downtown D.C. briefly closed the station Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out around 10 a.m. and a Metrorail spokesman said although it's been extinguished, trains are still being single-tracked through the area.

The fire was the latest of several suspected or confirmed track fires that have plagued portions of the Metrorail system over the past two days.

The report of a track fire reported to be on the Orange Line near the Falls Church stations earlier Wednesday was determined to be a false alarm.

There was another fire on a section of Red Line tracks near the Farragut North station Tuesday. Metro officials said an arcing track insulator caused that fire.

Metro said riders on the Red Line could face delays until regular train service is fully restored.
