The fire broke out at about 1:15 p.m. in the 8400 block of Carlisle Drive in Lomita, NBC 7/39 reported. Although it gutted the unit where it started, it did not affect any other units. It is not clear what caused the fire, which appeared to be a slow, intense fire that finally erupted.
Neighbors reported hearing a loud explosion -- the sound of a window being blown out by intense heat -- and then smelling plastic. Firefighters said they were able to get to the woman in the nick of time.
"It was smoky and we were walking around and were able to find the woman," said Brent Brainard, of the San Diego Fire Department. "It was our tactics, our strategy."
The woman was transported to UCSD Medical Center. Firefighters said she might have suffered minor burns along with the smoke inhalation. Her condition was unavailable.
