Dirty Linen Blamed for New Mexico Blaze

May 29, 2006
Firefighters managed to save the majority of the structure.

A section of the state's largest linen supplier burned to the ground Sunday, Action 7 News reported.

A large cloud of smoke rose from the Mission Uniform building off Interstate 25 near Ellison.

"When we got here, the fire was already spread through part of the warehouse," said area manager Bill Sanchez. "Damage to the receiving area is pretty extensive but three-fourths of the structure was saved."

More than 50 Albuquerque firefighters attacked the blaze using 20 different pieces of equipment.

The fire was under control in about 45 minutes, authorities said.

Most of the blaze was centered on the area where dirty linens are put, Sanchez said.

Sanchez said he thinks grease on a dirty uniform spontaneously combusted, sparking the fire.

"It's a natural thing, unfortunately," he said. "It's something we can't always stop."

Mission Uniform planned on being open on Monday, Sanchez said.

The company will re-order new uniforms to replace the ruined articles.
