Investigators say an electrical cord is to blame for a fire at a Southwest Miami-Dade home that trapped two elderly women inside.
It happened early Sunday morning near the 7900 block of Southwest 16th Street.
Fire officials say the flames started in a bedroom. When they arrived, the house was fully engulfed.
"Immediately upon arrival we found heavy smoke and flames. We went inside the house and located two victims, two elderly females, who were overcome by the smoke," said Capt. Al Cruz, of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. "They put them on their shoulders, brought them outside. They were treated with oxygen and transported to local hospitals."
Three other elderly residents were able to get out safely on their own.
